Phil's service

Taking care of your vehicle at the recommended service intervals can prevent future car problems, as well as even an accident. If your car should stall at stop lights, or does not have the required power to pass a slower vehicle, it is probably time for a car tune up.  Ask your mechanic for a diagnostic service to pinpoint any potential problems.

So how often do you need to get a tune up on your car? First, you should check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended schedule for your specific vehicle. Today’s cars with electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems can go from 25,000 miles up to as many as 100,000 miles without needing a major car tune-up. However, older cars with non-electronic ignitions will still need a tune up about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or every year, whichever comes first.Stop-and-go driving, pulling heavy loads (such as a camper or boat), or make lots of short trips, a car tune up may be needed more often than usual.

It’s time for a tune up if you start to notice any of the following problems:

  • Rough running -- Engine runs rough, especially when idling or accelerating.
  • Stalling -- If your vehicle starts to stall fairly frequently while slowing down or braking, the spark plugs may be worn, the gap between the spark plug electrodes or an electronic sensing device may need to be adjusted.
  • Starting problems -- You may have a weak battery, a bad fuel pump, a failing ignition system, or a faulty electronic component.

Tune ups are not the same for every vehicle, but is based on the age of your vehicle, the number of miles you drive, and the maintenance history. Ask your mechanic for a diagnostic service to check the various components and systems so that you can keep your car performing at peak operating efficiency.
