Phil's service

When did you last visit your auto shop for an oil change, a car tune up, or a tire rotation? Some vehicles owners tend to neglect these common maintenance services due to busy schedules and tight budgets. But, if you wait until you start to experience car problems before visiting your auto shop, some type of damage may already have taken place in your vehicle that costs more than the service would have cost you.

Be aware of the warning signs of these commonly seen problems:

  • Warning lights. If you see the little warning lights illuminate on your dash instrument panel, it means the computer system built into your vehicle is working to keep your vehicle operating efficiently. When you see these little lights start to flash, call your auto shop to schedule a diagnostic test that will pinpoint any potential problem.
  • Leaking fluids. Dark brown spots under the car indicate leaking motor oil from the filter, a lose drain plug, or a failing gasket. Greenish fluid under the car means the radiator is leaking, either from a bad fitting hose or a crack in the radiator unit. Leaking fluids can cause the engine to overheat and eventual damage in the engine or transmission.
  • Noisy Brakes. Squealing, squeaking, or metal-on-metal grinding sounds can indicate that the brake pads, rotors, calipers and discs have become worn out.
  • Loud and Unusual Sounds. Rumbling or stuttering sounds from under the car usually indicates a problem with the exhaust system, such as a hole in the muffler or possibly a failing catalytic converter. A worn drive belt (serpentine belt) that has become brittle or frayed can cause chirping or screeching sounds. Replace this belt at the appropriate interval to prevent it breaking while driving.
  • Noisy Tires. If your tires are humming, growling or roaring as you drive down the road, they may be out-of-round, the tread is too thin, or the wheel bearings are bad.

A Word to the Wise: If you see any of the problems above, schedule an inspection at your auto shop as soon as possible so that you are driving as safe as possible.
