We’re now past the holiday season and tightened budgets. During that time many vehicle owners off routine vehicle maintenance, thinking they are saving money. Drivers should understand that instead of saving money, they may end up spending more than expected on emergency repairs.

So what car maintenance is really necessary for safe winter driving:

  1. Good Tires – These are crucial to a vehicle’s ability to stop and turn effectively. Check the inflation pressure about every 1,000 miles. The right psi (pounds per square inch) will give you better mileage! Rotate tires on a regular basis for uniform tread-wear. If the tread is worn down to the wear bars, it’s time for a new set of tires. For winter, you may want to consider purchasing all-weather or snow tires.
  2. Oil Changes and Good Quality Filter – Your mechanic will keep you on track for oil changes. If you are driving with dirty oil, the cold temperatures will make your car’s performance more sluggish.
  3. Inspect the Brakes – At each visit to your auto shop, ask for an inspection of your brakes. Be aware of signs of brake failure, such as squealing noises, pedal softness, or vibration. A braking system in good working condition is crucial in snowy and icy conditions.
  4. Transmission – Inform your mechanic if you are noticing signs of transmission problems, such as shifting problems or delayed responses. Don’t wait until you have a major breakdown and are left stranded on the side of the road on a cold winter day!

Investing in preventative vehicle maintenance will give you big dividends, such as…

  • enhances the safety of you and your passengers, and other motorists;
  • increased gas mileage;
  • ensures a smoother running vehicle;
  • ensures your vehicle will come to a stop quickly; and a
  • reliable vehicle.

Remember: Even though scheduled car maintenance can sometimes cost more than is comfortable for your budget, it will save you money in the long run by prolonging the life of all the systems and parts that make your car function safely.
