What are the Signs a Transmission Going Bad?
For drivers who love their car, and if you want to keep it running for many miles, it is important to follow the intervals for transmission service recommended in your owner’s manual (i.e., every 60,000 to 100,000 miles). Know how your car responds so that you will notice if any of the following signs of a transmission going bad to appear:
- High RPMs at driving speed
- Delayed acceleration
- Inability to reverse
- Unusual or burnt smells
- Check engine light flashes
- Difficulty shifting gears--a harsh response or strange noises.
If regular transmission service is neglected, here are some of the issues that can develop:
- Overheating – There could be a leak in the transmission, resulting in low hydraulic pressure that makes it hard to shift. You may start to notice a smell like burnt toast.
- Worn or broken transmission bands – The band that links the gears in automatic transmissions can become worn or broken, causing shifting problems.
- Worn out gears – Gears can wear out due to normal wear and tear. Worn or frayed gears don’t properly link together, causing jerky shifting.
- Solenoid Problems – If the solenoid (the valve that controls the flow of fluid throughout the transmission) is damaged or there are electrical problems, the wrong amounts of fluid will be dispersed.
