Phil's service

Because car axles are built for strength that can hold the weight of a vehicle, many drivers won’t actually keep a car long enough for the axles to break. However, because axles are constantly rotating and flexing to accommodate different road conditions, they can wear out and you may be faced with CV joint repair. Also, if your car struts or shocks (whichever one your vehicle has) are wearing out and aren’t protecting the axles, the simple act of hitting a bump or pothole in the road can damage an axle.

What do the axles do for your car? They link the power from the engine to the tires, they carry the weight of the entire vehicle and they assist in driving, steering, and braking.

So how do you know if you have a bad axle:

  • You won’t be able to drive your car—power is not being transferred from the engine to the wheels.
  • A clunking sound can be heard when shifting.
  • You will feel excessive vibration throughout your vehicle while trying to drive.
  • Tires wear out faster than usual.
  • The shocks or struts wear out faster than usual.

If axels are so strong, what can damage them? Exceeding the weight limit of your vehicles, such as overloading with too much cargo or too many passengers, add stress to the shocks and axles. Also, as the miles add up on your vehicle, the axles become brittle and rusty, losing some of their strength, and are prone to breaking, especially on higher mileage vehicles. Exercise caution when choosing your roads, avoiding bumpy roads, or hitting potholes or other obstacles in the road. It can be quite costly if you have to replace shocks, tires, and or axles.
