Phil's service

As the holidays approach with all of its cold and icy weather, vehicle owners should make sure their vehicles are as safe as possible for winter travel.  A breakdown on the road is never a pleasant experience at any time of the year, but it can be deadly in winter.  Cold weather makes existing problems worse.  Scheduling an automotive service for a thorough inspection will help you avoid the inconvenience and potential danger of having a problem, such as a flat tire or transmission failure, miles away from home looking for an urgent automotive repair in a strange town.

A pre-trip automotive service makes it possible to have any necessary automotive repair made at home by your own trusted mechanic who already knows your vehicle.  Of course, there is no guarantee that the unexpected won’t happen, but your chances of a stress-free drive will significantly increase.

For peace of mind, have the following automotive service items checked out before heading down the road:

  • Tires and tire pressure:- you may need to rotate your tires, or purchase new tires;
  • Brakes:- your braking system must be functioning properly in snowy and icy road conditions;
  • Hoses and belts:- the cold may make them brittle, subject to cracking and leaking;
  • Air filters:- fresh air filters will keep the motor running smoothly;
  • Wipers and windshield:- make sure there are no existing chips or cracks in the windshield as cold temperatures can make them get bigger. Replace worn-out wiper blades, and make sure the front and rear defrosters are working properly;
  • Lights:- both exterior and interior.  Replace any burned-out bulbs;
  • Oil change:- follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended interval schedule.  Invest in a high-quality filter;
  • Fluid levels:- including windshield washer solvent and antifreeze.  Be sure the ratio of antifreeze is adequate for freezing temperatures.

Caution:  Make sure you have a roadside emergency kit in the trunk that includes a first aid kit, a tire-changing jack, a tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, a flashlight, water bottles, snacks, and a blanket.  Program emergency numbers into your cell phone, and don’t forget the charger!
