Phil's service

Some drivers may not understand that it is the transmission that transfers the power from the engine to the wheels that allows your car to move. This is why clean transmission fluid is crucial for the performance and drivability of your vehicle. Regular transmission service at the right time or mileage intervals (read your owner’s manual) will help your vehicle keep operating strong for many miles, while also preventing costly transmission repair.

You may be wondering how often should the transmission fluid be changed and how does it get dirty in the first place? You may have heard that transmission fluid should last the life of the car. However, as the miles add up on your vehicle, the metal bearings and gears inside the transmission start to wear out and generates small metal particles that are left in the transmission fluid. The fluid will then lose its effectiveness to lubricate the moving components inside the transmission unit as well as the engine. Leaving these contaminants inside the fluid rather than flushing them out, heat is crated by the friction of those moving parts. This heat shortens the lifespan of your transmission significantly, leaving you with the prospect of a major transmission repair, such as a transmission rebuild or replacing the transmission.

So how often should the transmission fluid be changed? As referenced above, read your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendation. It should agree with your mechanic’s advice. Typically, a manual transmission requires a temporary transmission flush between every 30,000-60,000 miles. For automatic transmission, a transmission flush is recommended between every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

Any one or more of the signs below are signs of possible transmission problems. Prevent a major transmission repair by heading to your auto shop as soon as possible:

  • Whining Noise
  • Grinding Noise
  • Delayed Shifting
  • Popping out of Gear
  • Transmission Fluid Leak

Tip to Remember: Have the level of transmission fluid checked between service intervals (such as at every oil change). Irreparable damage to the engine and transmission can be caused due to lack of lubrication because of low transmission fluid.
