What's on Your Winter Car Maintenance Checklist?

Vehicle maintenance is not something that people should put off, especially during the cold winter months. Make sure you have a winter car maintenance checklist so that nothing, no matter how small, is overlooked. Cold temperatures can cause even the smallest issues to potentially lead to an accident, getting stranded somewhere, or just having a bad day on the road.

Here are a few points to consider before heading out on wet or icy roads:

Check your tires! If you are driving on tires without adequate tread, there is nothing more hazardous. The better the tread, the better your wheels will "grip" the road, leading to less slipping and sliding, and much safer driving. Also make sure the inflation pressure is correct as well.
Check the Fluids! Be sure that all fluids are topped off. This includes antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, oil, coolant, and even gas. Choose a windshield fluid that is formulated for cold temperatures so that it won't freeze in the tank. Keep your gas tank filled to at least halfway. This can be a lifesaver if you happen to get stuck in traffic or road construction, spend a lot of time warming up your vehicle, or simply get busy and run out of time.
Check the Wiper Blades! Be sure that the wiper blades work properly. This is important to clear off snow and ice, and to keep windows clear from dirt and dust from rock salt and road debris.
Have an Emergency Kit! Be prepared with extra gloves, a snow brush, a phone charger, a blanket, road flares, and some snacks and water. Having these items on hand can help turn a disaster into a minor inconvenience.
