Most of us bought or were given a car a few weeks after receiving our drivers' license. The car's function was to get us from point A to B. It was hard to know the issues involved in maintaining that vehicle and strange noises and odd smells were scary. One of the most common problem area in older vehicles is the exhaust system.

If you heard a constant roar coming from underneath your vehicle, the first words that came to your mind were, "how much does a muffler cost?" First of all, you may be asking, what is a muffler?

The muffler acts as a silencer. In other words, when you are in the car, and even out of the car, you should hear a finely tuned engine devoid of the roaring sound associated with motorcycles, which do not use mufflers.

Problems with the Muffler

The most audible sign of a problem is the rumbling or roar of the once quiet engine. The common problems are rust caused by salt, snow, and rain and holes in the muffler, mostly caused by rocks.

How Much does a Muffler Cost?

If your particular car is a high-performance car, you may need two mufflers. If you are lucky, a hole in the muffler can be repaired with commercial muffler patching kits which should cost you no more than twenty dollars.

The muffler has very little to do with how the exhaust system works. The exhaust system connects to the engine's manifold to divert gases through the front pipe. The gases are filtered through the catalytic converter. The treated gases are sent through the muffler, which is attached near the exhaust pipe.
