In order for your vehicle to keep running at its peak performance level, it’s important to keep all vehicle maintenance items up-to-date, including an inspection of the exhaust system. A good exhaust system will keep your car running quietly, reduce toxic emissions, and improve fuel efficiency. Visit your auto shop before you find yourself wondering what are the signs of a bad muffler?

How does the Exhaust System work?

  • Exhaust Manifold/Header: This is the first point of contact for the exhaust gases after they exit the cylinder head.
  • Catalytic Converter: This device takes the incoming NOx, CO, and unburnt hydrocarbons from the exhaust and “converts” it into much less harmful N2, O2, CO2, and H2O.
  • Piping: Routes the air away from the vehicle so the passenger cabin doesn’t fill with toxic fumes.
  • Resonator: Helps eliminate noise by rejecting sound waves and canceling each other out.
  • Muffler: Eliminates noise by redirecting the airflow through porous pipes, allowing the exhaust gases to expand into the sound deadening material, minimizing the noise that finally exits the tailpipe.

So what are the signs of a bad muffler?

  1. Roaring/rattling noises
  2. Decreased fuel efficiency
  3. Toxic fumes
  4. Vibrating
  5. Check Engine Light
