If you’re a vehicle owner, you know that vehicles can require a lot of auto maintenance. One small, but important issue is tire pressure. Many drivers don't understand how tire pressure affects the performance of a vehicle. They may not even think about their tires until they start to notice steering problems and find themselves stranded by the side of the road needing an urgent tire repair.

Each car has a specified inflation pressure that is ideal for the specific car. The proper inflation pressure prevents damage to your wheel rims. If you’re unsure about the exact pressure that is meant for your tires, you will find it listed in your owner's manual or on a sticker on the driver's door jam.

If your tires don’t have enough air pressure, too much weight may be put on the wheel rims, resulting in damage to the rims, much more expensive to replace than tires. Tire pressure that is too high is also a problem. Too much air in your tires will cause an uneven ride, or a potential blow-out while driving.

You can check the air pressure yourself by investing in a tire pressure gauge. All you have to do is unscrew the cap on the tire nozzle and press the gauge onto the nozzle. The gauge will give you the exact pressure in the tire. If it is too low then you can add air with a pump or air compressor. Use the back of the gauge to remove air. Most auto shops are happy to check your air pressure for free at any time.

Tip to Remember: Checking the air pressure in your tires is one of the most important aspects of good vehicle maintenance.
